CUET- A Mandatory Entrance Test for Undergraduate Admissions

The University Grant Commission announced Central University Entrance Test (CUET) for admissions in undergraduate courses in universities funded by the UGC. It will be a mandatory common test that will be conducted in the first week of July by the NTA (National Test Agency). All central universities will now accept students for undergraduate programs based on the CUET test and not class 12 marks.

The new regulation will come into force from the academic year 2022 to 2023.

CUET exam will bring a student-friendly reform in the state, private, and deemed universities as it will provide equal opportunities to students around the country, especially in Northeast and rural India. Also, it will be a great help for parents of economically backward students as they don’t have to spend on multiple entrance exams.

According to the UGC Chairperson, M Jagadesh Kumar, it is compulsory for the 45 central universities to adopt CUET for admission in undergraduate courses. As far as postgraduate admissions are concerned, universities are allowed the flexibility to use the CUET score for now.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  1. The test will be held in 13 different languages, including English, Hindi, Assamese, Gujarati, Bengali, Malayalam, Marathi, Kannada, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.
  2. The course for CUET will include basic concepts that students have already learned in their CBSE 12 syllabus. There will be a few practical components for skill-based courses, such as music, painting, sculpture and theatre. Universities will share other guidelines related to the exam.
  3. International students are exempted from CUET. For postgraduate courses, several universities have joined this initiative but UGC is hoping that all of them will soon shift to CUET and make the best of it.

Eligibility and Other Key Points for CUET

  • For an undergraduate exam, candidates must have completed 10+2 in any subject or stream from a recognized board.
  • If students are appearing for the postgraduate CUET exam, they must have a bachelor’s degree in the required field from a recognized university.
  • There will be no aptitude test for CUET 2022 entrance exam and will include a general test, a domain-specific test, and a compulsory language test.
  • It will be a three-and-a-half hour-long exam conducted in two shifts, and the questions will be based on the class 12 NCERT syllabus. Candidates will answer multiple-choice questions in every section.
  • In the first phase, candidates will choose one language out of 13 to answer the questions. They will also have to appear in two domain-specific exams and a general test. In the second phase, students can appear in four domain-specific subjects if they want along with one language test, which includes French, Arabic, German, etc.

Conclusion

The UGC will be making new updates to the CUET in the coming years. The objective of the exam is to give students a chance to get admission based on their skills and knowledge rather than their marks. If implemented right, we hope to see the change soon.
